A Short Rant – I’ll post this while I’m still angry

What drives me away from the lovely open fire tonight is Barb’s declaration:  “I like Trump”. I don’t even wait for more information. Seriously, this is the man who stacked the Supreme (ha ha) Court with lackeys who have no respect for women, for children, or self determination.

After an enjoyable round of where have you been, and where are you going, and how long have you been travelling, (the usual camp chat) I can no longer rely on myself to be cool, calm and intellectually inquisitive about these opinions.

We’ve had 15 minutes of Barb expounding the efficacy of six days a week at the gym to prevent Covid, while her fat ass husband says the only people who die from Covid are obese.

Adam, who seemed like a normal person when we invited him over for a drink, tells us he lost his job as a social worker because he wouldn’t get vaccinated.  We wasted two gins on him. He says got Covid, but it wasn’t bad, although he couldn’t move for a few days. But he didn’t need to take the Ivermectin he’d bought before it became illegal – fecking Ivermectin! Not approved, actually for animals as an anti-parasitic for crying out loud.

Some of you, gentle readers, want to know more about the people we meet. Well, they are some of them. I’m sorry I have to meet them on your behalf.

  1. Angry, yeah!
I feel you. But that’s just me. How many times have I heard “ but I never get the flu…”
    Don’t get me started. Grrr..

  2. Hi Bev and Scott, loved your rant, gave us a laugh but agree with you there are some real tossers out there. We got as far as Geraldton. Fly home Monday evening. Have had a great time. Love WA. Looking forward to hear of your travels. Keep safe. Carol and Jeff xxx

  3. Oi larfed! If it makes you feel any better, they are all around us. I was chatting to the bloke next to me at a Cotswold pub last week who, it turns out, is from Whangarei. He didn’t get vaccinated “…because the body needs to defend itself… and there must be something wrong with a vaccine that was developed so fast…” Like you say, hard to be cool, calm and intellectually inquisitive about these opinions…

  4. I’ve been astounded, & frankly a bit frightened over the last few years by the preponderance of ignorant idiots around us.. had previously thought them to be a fringe group not worth giving thought to.
Not so, as recent events here in the USA have demonstrated.

  5. I have started to avoid the campground happy hours due to folks like Barb, worse yet I have had folks like that as site neighbours!! I try to side step conversations about the US, which is hard given my accent! I have reverted to saying I am from NY when asked if American……

  6. Bev that is why Kit and Jim had to get out of some camp sites in Queensland. What amazes me is that these people manage to get through life and know how to get a free g&t from the dumb Kiwis! All goo here . Pretty warm winter in Papamoa. Xxxxx

  7. Wow I’m amazed it took this you this long to find bigoted red necks in Australia… it must be much better than when I last visited, its great to hear you are still out there checking their progress towards tolerance and love for the planet🤣👍

    • It didn’t take that long MArk – It’s just that til that night I’d managed to check myself!

  8. If I start thinking about Trump and the pro-life rabble I will spend the day muttering darkly, hitting the wine and fantasising about ways Trump could die painfully 😡

  9. Refreshingly honest post, Bev! Like Joy, the seemingly increasing levels of ignorance and bigotry evident in our society is concerning. This is partly why I am seeking to build an off-road-capable compact motorhome with a very significant off-grid capacity – so I can steer clear of the morons from time to time (….the only down side being that the waiting list for new builds is creeping up towards 18 months!) – and be in a position to host you and Scott to a civilised G&T somewhere in the Australian outback one day!

  10. I wonder if the Social worker had tetanus or polio vaccination? Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not about and why should a public health system pay for his care. Perhaps if he had to fork out some $’s he might change his tune. And a little tetanus might sort him out!
Maybe just stick to talking about the weather around the camp fire with your mask on and a bio degradable straw in your G&T. Good luck.

  11. I went to a reunion of school friends recently & got into a discussion about Covid vaccination too. The guy I was speaking with had been very successful in life, very wealthy, but unfortunately very entitled too. He spouted on about the conspiracy & self interest of Big Pharma & politicians & questioned the speed of vaccination development as well as freedom of choice & mandated vaccinations, job losses & border closures etc. I managed to put him straight about a few of his misconceptions & the background regarding vax research. I then turned to have a more pleasant conversation with my friend on my left.
The anti-vaxxer had been such a ‘nice young man’ at school too.
    It’s out there 🙁
P.S. He was a Trump fan boy too !!!!

  12. They are everywhere just waiting for unsuspecting people. Be careful who you share your gin with! Jo and Tim both have covid.

  13. Your lucky Bev, I haven’t met a Trump supporter in two years. Have a good laugh at their answers to questions like is climate change real, do carbon emissions add to climate change, and will more young woman die because of abortion bans.

  14. Oh boy…. I can’t even imagine if I would be able to hold my tongue. Thank God I live in NYC where the orange cockroach is probably the most despised former resident ever. None of his family can even live here anymore. There is still a group of Trumpers but mainly in places like Staten Island and Long Island and some parts of Brooklyn. I struggle to understand how many have been taken in by this craven and malevolent POS.
